Understanding Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating, medically known as hyperhidrosis (Hh), is a condition characterized by abnormally increased perspiration above that required for regulating body temperature. According to dermatological research data published in 2016, approximately 15.3 million individuals—or 4.8% of the population—are living with hyperhidrosis in the U.S. This prevalence makes it more common than many well-known conditions, such as autism, melanoma, psoriasis, and even peanut allergies. Hyperhidrosis can be divided into two main types: primary focal hyperhidrosis, where the excessive sweating is localized to specific areas such as the palms, soles, underarms, or face and is not caused by another medical condition or medication; and secondary generalized hyperhidrosis, which is due to an underlying health condition or is a side effect of medication. People with hyperhidrosis often experience significant impacts on their quality of life, from physical discomfort to social and emotional challenges. The exact cause of primary hyperhidrosis is not well understood, but it is believed to involve overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, specifically the nerves that control the sweat glands.
