About Kybella

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the submental area, Kybella is a nonsurgical option for upper neck fat. Just a bit of extra fat in the upper throat area will create the presence of a "double chin" that is usually unwanted by both women and men. The additional pockets of fat below the chin (or the submental area) can be caused by aging, weight fluctuations, or genetics that lead to a softer jawline and chin for a less defined profile. Boston, MA board-certified internal medicine physician Dr. Rosy Sandhu is happy to provide a Kybella, an innovative injectable treatment to reduce neck fat.

The active component in Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid (DA), which works similarly like the body's natural DA to the dissolve and absorb fat cells. After it has been injected beneath the chin, you can see a visible decrease in the size of the chin. When the fat is removed, the cells will not regenerate, so you can enjoy your new, slender neck and defined jawline for years to come. If you would like to see if you qualify for Kybella in Boston, Lynnfield, or Winchester, MA, please schedule a visit with one of our three offices.

Ideal Candidates

The ideal candidates for Kybella injectable treatments have unwanted fat in the upper throat (submental area), which creates a double chin or unwanted volume. This injection corrects resistant areas of fat that can't be removed with common weight loss techniques due to genetics, aging, and several other conditions. If you are near a healthy, stable weight, but exercise and diet have not been able to eliminate the fat in your submental area, Kybella may be the correct option for your goals. While Kybella can be used to address small or moderate pockets of fat in the upper neck, significant pockets of fat may be better suited for a more invasive procedure.

Treatment Technique

Kybella is injected during an appointment in one of our treatment rooms. Dr. Sandhu will generally apply a numbing gel to the injected area(if desired) once the skin is clean. The injection lasts around 15 minutes, which comprises of a few small injections into the upper neck area. Patients may require a single treatment to get to their desired look, while some may want a few injections spaced out three weeks between each appointment at Neem Medical Spa.

Kybella treatment plans are tailored specifically to each patient depending on his or her degree of fat and skin laxity. However, on average, most patients need between 2 – 3 treatments spaced six weeks apart. You should start noticing the results 4 – 6 weeks after your first treatment, but the best results are seen six weeks after your last visit.

What to Expect

Injections of Kybella don't need general anesthesia, so you are allowed to leave our office when you are ready to return to your daily routine. You may notice short-term bruising, numbness, or swelling below your chin, although this shouldn't last more than a couple of days. Contact Neem Medical Spa right away if you are noticing any unusual symptoms, including difficulty swallowing, facial muscle weakness, or if your facial expressions are uneven. While the fat that is eliminated do not regenerate, the cells left over can grow larger, so you need to keep a stable weight after your Kybella treatments to keep new pockets of fat from developing. Ideal results after this procedure leave your neck appearing sleeker and tighter and your neckline will be better defined.
