About Laser Hair Removal

Not having to shave, wax, bleach, or pluck are all reason enough for choosing a longer-term solution like laser hair removal. Have you thought about treating yourself to a laser hair removal session? As one of the most popular elective treatments in America, laser hair removal is an effective option for the reduction of your hair follicles on your body and/or face.

Compared to other options, laser hair removal makes having hair-free skin that looks and feels smooth a possibility, which is very attractive to many men and women. Board-certified internal medicine physician Dr. Rosy Sandhu at Neem Medical Spa performs Lumenis LightSheer and Cutera excel HR laser hair removal services in the frequently needed areas like the legs, back, arms, face, chest, armpits, groin, and bikini area. If you would like to find out more information, please schedule a consultation at any of our three locations in Boston, Lynnfield, or Winchester, MA.

Ideal Candidates

Reducing hair follicle growth with a laser is a safe process that is suitable for many patients. In your initial consultation, we will talk about your concerns, needs, and goals to decide if you should get this treatment. Men and women of all skin types are suitable candidates for laser hair removal. However, the most effective treatments work on brown or black hair. There needs to be visible pigment in the hair follicle for the laser to target the melanin. Lasers cannot target light blonde or red hair. Ideal candidates for laser hair removal treatments:

  • Want to reduce hair on their face or body
  • Want to stop using other hair removal methods (waxing, shaving, bleaching, depilatory creams)
  • Have darker hair with lighter skin
  • Are in good, overall physical health

Treatment Technique

Before Your First Session
We ask that you stop all shaving, waxing, tweezing, bleaching, and plucking the skin you want to have laser hair removal. Before your laser hair removal sessions, do not wax or tweeze the area to be treated with the laser. For the treatment to work effectively, the root of the hair must be sustained so it must be left as natural as possible (we will ask you to shave 24 hours before your appointment). This will help prevent skin damage due to the laser heating the hair. Furthermore, shaving the area prepares the laser for easy insertion directly into the follicles.

Also, always protect your skin from direct sunlight (especially 2 – 3 weeks prior to the treatment). Do not use a tanning bed. If you must be out in the sun, remember to apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 50. Remember, you can always call our office for any laser hair removal questions or concerns.

Your Laser Hair Removal Session
On the day of your laser hair removal appointment, you will lie in a private treatment room as areas of your face and/or body being treated are washed to eliminate oil, dirt, and moisturizers. During the procedure, a team member will stretch out the area to create a clear pathway between the root of the hair follicle and the laser. The laser's energy will focus on and disable the follicle, which stops the hair from growing again. Usually, you will need to get 3 – 5 treatments over 3 – 4 weeks to see your ideal results. Your appointments are staggered to give the affected areas a chance to heal. It also allows time for follicles in the dormant phase to reach the phase of active growth so the laser can be effective. The state-of-the-art technology we use at Neem Medical Spa (the Lumenis LightSheer and Cutera excel HR) targets only the hair follicle to preserve the skin and other tissue in the area being treated.

During your appointment, please do not ignore safety regulations, which include wearing protective eyewear to reduce the risk of eye damage. We want you to relax and remember that you’ll be made as comfortable as possible throughout your experience. Streams of cooled air will be present to protect your skin to keep this treatment as pain-free as possible.

What to Expect

At home following your appointment, we suggest applying soothing creams, aloe vera, or ice packs to soothe any mild discomfort. We also ask that you do not shave the treated area until it has healed. If you experience redness or itching, try not to scratch it. Both may cause the area to heal slower and may lead to tissue scarring. Additionally, do not expose your treated area to extreme heat like hot baths or saunas. Stay out of all swimming pools for up to three days to reduce the risk of irritation. It is important to remember not to use aspirin or Ibuprofen as a means for pain relief as they cause a negative reaction after lasers procedures. Finally, avoid bleach, fragrances, and tight-fitting clothing on the treated skin for at least two days after the procedure. Lastly, do seek medical attention if you notice signs of infection, like the development of pus, swelling, and/or fever.
